Banner ads? Really?

26/04/13

We are bombarded with so many banner ads these days that we don't even notice them. Unless of course they're the intrusive kinds that fill your screen unwanted… or the ones where the grim reaper himself screeches when you accidentally mouse-over. First there was darkness in the world. Then suddenly a tiny light appears. And another and another. Before you know it the world map starts to light up and you don't know where to look anymore.

What you are looking at is Twitter activity around the globe. Not all of it, but definitely a good portion of it. Tweet Ping is a website developed by Franck Ernewein, a Paris-based developer, that tracks tweets in real time, using Twitter's streaming APIs.

Though the data presented isn't complete (as only geolocalized tweets are shown), it definitely gives an idea of the reach of Twitter and why it could be very useful to monitor all this social chitter-chatter. It's a lot of information being put out there into the world, that if harvested correctly could be used for all kinds of good and evil...
